# Why are my Google Ads getting clicks but not converting?

Google Ads clicks but no conversions: tell a tracking fault from a campaign that isn't converting, allow for conversion delay, and find where its clicks went.

In short

- A campaign with clicks and no conversions is one of two things: conversions that happen and aren't counted, or clicks that don't convert. They need opposite fixes, so find out which first.
- Check the counting. Read each conversion action's status, then put All conv. beside Conversions: only the primary actions a campaign optimizes toward are counted in Conversions.
- Allow for delay. Google reports a conversion on the day of the click, so recent days fill in later, and the Days to conversion segment shows how long yours take.
- Then judge the spend: divide the campaign's cost by what a conversion usually costs you. At three conversions' worth with none, luck explains it about 1 time in 20.
- Goldbeater reads every campaign's clicks, cost and conversions every day, and raises one that spent three conversions' worth with no sale or lead, one whose conversions collapsed, and a conversion action gone quiet.

Goldbeater checks this every 24 hours

- A campaign that spends and never converts
- A campaign whose conversions suddenly collapsed
- A conversion action that suddenly stopped recording

The manual way comes first, in Google Ads itself. Then the same problem as Goldbeater finds it, every day, without anyone asking.

## Clicks with no conversions have two causes, and opposite fixes.

A campaign that gets clicks and shows no conversions is in one of two states. Either people are buying and Google Ads isn’t counting it, or the clicks aren’t turning into customers. In the Campaigns table the two look the same: clicks, a cost, and a zero.

They need opposite fixes. If the counting is broken, pausing the campaign turns off sales you can’t see. If the counting is sound, mending a tag changes nothing, and the money keeps going where it went.

So take it in this order: check that conversions are recorded and counted, allow for the days they take to arrive, work out whether the campaign has spent enough to expect one, and only then look at where its clicks went.

## First, check that your conversion actions are recording

1. Go to Goals › Conversions › Summary.
2. Read the Status column for each conversion action, and hover over a status for Google’s detail.

- Active: the action is working as intended.
- Needs attention: there are things to fix, and it hasn’t stopped recording.
- Misconfigured: it has stopped recording entirely, because of a setup error or a broken tag.
- Awaiting conversions: it recorded nothing in the last 7 days. Google says that typically means the action was created under 48 hours ago, your campaigns are paused, or traffic is too low to trigger a conversion.

Some of Google’s pages still use older names for these, such as No recent conversions and Inactive.

Misconfigured is a tracking fault, whatever the campaign is doing. The [conversion tracking guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/conversion-tracking-check) shows how to test the action and find what broke. Awaiting conversions says only that nothing was recorded for 7 days, which a quiet week does as well as a fault. And a status describes the action across your whole account, so Active can’t say why one campaign has none. The next check can.

## Conversions vs All conversions in Google Ads: which one reads zero?

The Conversions column doesn’t show everything your tags record. Google puts in it only the primary conversion actions the campaign optimizes toward. All conv. shows every action, primary and secondary, and adds sources that Conversions leaves out, such as store visits and certain phone calls.

A secondary action is for observation: Google reports it in All conv., and bidding ignores it unless it’s part of a custom goal. A campaign can also be set to goals of its own in place of the account’s defaults, under Conversion goals in its settings, and then it counts only the goals picked for it. Either way a sale can be recorded and still be missing from the campaign’s Conversions.

So read the two columns side by side:

1. Go to Campaigns › Campaigns and set the date range to the last 30 days.
2. Select the columns icon above the table and add All conv. beside Conversions.
3. Select Segment above the table, then Conversions › Conversion action. Each campaign gets a row for each action its clicks recorded. Clicks, Impr. and Cost show “--” under this segment, which is expected.

- Conversions at zero, and your sale or lead under All conv. The conversion happened and was recorded, and this campaign doesn’t count it. The action is secondary, or the campaign’s goals leave it out. Nothing is wrong with the tag or the traffic. If that action is what the campaign is for, make it count: the [conversion tracking guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/conversion-tracking-check) shows where an action is set to primary or secondary.
- Both at zero for this campaign, while other campaigns record the action. The tag works, since it fires on their clicks. This campaign’s clicks haven’t converted, or not yet.
- Both at zero in every campaign. Nothing is being recorded anywhere: a tag taken off the site, an import that stopped, or no conversion action set up. Test the tracking before you change any campaign.
- Only a step before the sale under All conv. An add to cart or a page view says visitors got that far and no further. The tag is firing on this campaign’s clicks, and nobody bought.

## Allow for conversion delay before you judge a recent week

Google Ads reports a conversion on the day of the click that led to it, not the day it happened. Someone who clicked last week and bought this week is added to last week. So the newest days always read lower than they will end up, and a campaign switched on a week ago may show nothing for clicks that haven’t converted yet.

Google keeps recording for as long as the action’s conversion window runs: 30 days after the click unless you changed it, and up to 90. Reporting adds hours on top. Google gives 3 hours for its own conversion tracking under last click attribution and 15 under other models, and 12 and 24 for an import from Google Analytics.

How long your own customers take is something you can read:

1. Go to Campaigns › Campaigns.
2. Set a date range that ends at least 30 days ago, or longer if your conversion window is longer, so every click in it has had its time to convert.
3. Select Segment, then Conversions › Days to conversion. The conversion columns split into up to 19 rows, by how long the conversion took.
4. Add up the rows to see what share of your conversions arrive within a day, within a week, and later. Google’s own advice is to use the segment to decide how long to wait before you read a day’s conversion numbers.

A week read too early

Example

Say a third of your conversions arrive more than 7 days after the click. A week you read on the Monday after it shows at most two-thirds of the conversions it will end with, so its cost per conversion reads at least half as high again as it is.

Three other places show the delay. Hover over a campaign’s figure in the Conversions column for Google’s conversion lag card. With Smart Bidding, the bid strategy report, which opens from the campaign’s Bid strategy type column, shows conversion delay when more conversions are likely to arrive in the dates you chose. And Path metrics, under Goals › Attribution, gives the average days to conversion.

To see conversions on the day they happened, add the columns that end (by conv. time), such as Conversions (by conv. time).

## Has the campaign spent enough to expect a conversion?

A zero means something only once the campaign has spent enough for a conversion to be due. Work it out in money, since clicks differ in price from one campaign to the next:

1. Find what a conversion costs you. If the campaign has a target CPA, use that. If not, read Cost / conv. for each campaign that converts and take the middle one, or halfway between the middle two. The middle is steadier than the account’s average, which one large campaign sets.
2. Divide the campaign’s cost by that figure. The result is how many conversions its spend would have bought at your usual price.
3. Read the chance of none by luck. At one conversion’s worth, a campaign that converts at your usual price still shows none 37% of the time. At two, 14%. At three, 5%, and at five, under 1%.

Last 30 days

Sample data

| Campaign | Clicks | Cost | Conversions | All conv. | Cost / conv. |

| Sofas — Phrase | 1,180 | $2,016 | 21.1 | 34.1 | $95.55 |
| Brand — Exact | 960 | $1,176 | 25.5 | 40.5 | $46.12 |
| Rugs — Broad | 890 | $1,260 | 3.8 | 17.8 | $331.58 |
| Competitors | 318 | $504 | 0.0 | 4.0 | — |

Four campaigns convert, at $46.12, $75.03, $95.55 and $331.58 a conversion, and halfway between the middle two is $85.29. Competitors spent $504: divided by $85.29, that is 5.9 conversions’ worth with none, which luck explains 0.3% of the time. Its All conv. reads 4.0, every one an add to cart: the tag fires on its clicks, and nobody bought. Rugs — Broad converts, at about four times the typical price. That is a different problem, and it starts with the campaign’s weeks, as the next section does.

The sum assumes conversions arrive at random at a steady price, which is close enough to say when a zero has stopped being luck. It can’t say why. That takes the campaign itself.

## When tracking is sound, look in this order

1. Its weeks. On Campaigns › Campaigns, set the date range to the last three months and select Segment, then Time, then Week. A campaign that never converted is a different problem from one that converted until a certain week. If it stopped, something changed that week: Campaigns › Change history lists the changes made to the account, its campaigns and ad groups over the past 2 years, and filters by type of change. Check the tracking again too. A campaign that stops on a date is as often a tag or a goal as its traffic.
2. The searches its clicks came from. Go to Campaigns › Insights and reports › Search terms, filter to the campaign and sort by cost. A search term is what a person typed, and a keyword is what you bid on: the Keyword and Match type columns show which keyword matched each search and how closely. Ask of each search whether that person would buy what the page sells. Google leaves out searches with too little activity, so the report may not account for every click. The [wasted search terms guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/wasted-search-terms) covers adding the ones that don’t fit as negative keywords.
3. The landing page. Campaigns › Insights and reports › Landing pages breaks your traffic down by the page it was sent to. Open the campaign’s page on a phone, the way a customer arrives: does it show what the ad promised, and can you finish the purchase or the form? A page that doesn’t load at all is a different fault, which the [destination not working guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/destination-not-working) covers.
4. The bid strategy’s status. Read the campaign’s Status column. Learning follows a change to the strategy, and Google says it can take one to two conversion cycles to calibrate. Limited names what holds it back, such as bid limits or a budget. Misconfigured means a strategy that bids on conversions has no conversion action it can use. A strategy that bids on conversions learns from the ones the campaign counts, so with none it has nothing to learn from. The [bid strategy guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/bid-strategy-learning) covers what resets learning.

Then act on what you found. Searches that don’t fit want negatives or a narrower match type. Searches that fit and a page that loses them want the page fixed before more budget. A campaign with the right searches, a sound page and several conversions’ worth spent with none is one to pause, or to judge by what it’s for if its job isn’t a sale or a lead.

## What it looks like when Goldbeater finds it

Every day Goldbeater reads each enabled campaign’s last 30 days: what it spent, what it counted, and everything its clicks recorded, counted or not. It raises a campaign that counted no conversion, whose clicks recorded no sale or lead of any kind, and that has spent at least 3 times its own target CPA. Where it has no target, the price is what your typical converting campaign pays for a conversion, the middle one and never the account’s average. That is the sum above, at the point luck explains about 1 time in 20. A campaign that bids for impressions or views is left out, since conversions aren’t its job.

Why it matters

A campaign that has spent at least three conversions' worth in 30 days, at its own target or at what your typical campaign pays for one, and made no sale or lead, counted or not. The figure is its whole spend. Its search-term findings count part of the same money, so a campaign's total counts it once. The finding shows its last 13 weeks, and what its clicks recorded instead, with an invalid-traffic tool's flags apart from visits.

What to do

Maximize conversions has had no conversion to learn from. If Competitors is meant to bring sales or leads, pause it (the change below) or narrow it to the searches that convert: its search terms show where the money went. If its job is one the account doesn't count as a sale or lead, such as downloads, judge it by that instead.

What would change

Pause the campaign

Its ads stop showing everywhere it runs, not only on the searches that don't convert, until it's turned back on. Goldbeater refuses it at Apply if a rule in Settings guards this campaign.

Goldbeater offers this change without recommending it, so nothing is drafted until you pick it. It reaches your account when you approve it in the change set and press Apply.

This is “A campaign that spends and never converts” on a sample account. Goldbeater runs it on yours every 24 hours, and your AI analyst answers what you ask about any finding.

[Get a free first look](https://goldbeater.ai/app?start=look)

Sample data. Cedar & Pine Interiors is an invented account, and its figures are made up.

That is the table’s Competitors row: $504 at $85.29 a conversion is about 6, with none. The finding adds the campaign’s 13 weeks, which show it never converted, and what its clicks recorded that its goals don’t count. The pause is offered and not recommended, because Goldbeater can’t see what else a campaign is for: a market you’re opening, or your own name defended.

A campaign that converted and then stopped gets a different finding. Goldbeater sets each campaign’s last two, three or four weeks against the four weeks before them, click for click, and raises one whose clicks brought under a quarter of the conversions its earlier rate gives, where at least 10 were expected and so few is unlikely by chance across every campaign tested. A conversion action you took out of the campaign’s goals is left out of both sides, so a goal you changed doesn’t read as a fall.

Why it matters

A campaign whose last few weeks' clicks brought under a quarter of the conversions its clicks brought the month before, in the actions it still counts: a tag stopped firing, an import stopped arriving, or something changed on the page. Smart Bidding learns from what the campaign counts, so it adjusts to the fall as if it were real.

What to do

Maximize conversion value bids to what it counts, so it's learning from the fall. Something changed in what Rugs — Broad counts, or in who reaches it, from the week of Aug 31. Start with what it counts: the conversion goals in its settings, each action's status under Goals › Conversions, and the account's Change history for that week. If an action that isn't a sale or lead stopped counting, the fall is the fix, and the weeks before were overstated. If not, check the tag on the page its clicks land on with Google Tag Assistant, or the import that sends its leads, then what changed in its keywords, ads and landing page. Where several campaigns fell the same week, one action, tag or import is likely behind them all.

What would change

The steps under What to do are the fix. Goldbeater drafts no change for this one.

This is “A campaign whose conversions suddenly collapsed” on a sample account. Goldbeater runs it on yours every 24 hours, and your AI analyst answers what you ask about any finding.

[Get a free first look](https://goldbeater.ai/app?start=look)

Sample data. Cedar & Pine Interiors is an invented account, and its figures are made up.

Rugs — Broad made 24.2 purchases from 824 clicks in the 4 weeks before, and 3.6 from 831 in the last 4, while its carts held at 13. People still reach the cart, so the fall comes after it: the checkout, or the tag that records the purchase. Goldbeater keeps a campaign like this out of the first finding, since pausing it would be the wrong fix.

Three more checks cover the counting itself, across the whole account:

- A conversion action that goes quiet. An action Google records itself, a tag, a call or an Analytics import, that recorded on each of 14 days and nothing dated since. Goldbeater counts by the day of the conversion, leaves out yesterday while Google is still reporting it (and the day before for an Analytics import), and raises the silence when it’s longer than any in the quarter before and your campaigns’ clicks make it unlikely.
- No conversion counted anywhere. An account that is spending with no enabled conversion action counting toward its goals: none set up, or every one secondary. Every campaign’s Conversions column reads zero, whatever its clicks did.
- The whole account converting less, week after week. Each of the last four weeks or more under every earlier week of the last 13, in conversions per click and in total. It’s read by the day of the conversion, so a recent week isn’t short only because its conversions are still arriving.

Goldbeater emails your workspace’s owners and admins the day a daily pass first finds an action gone quiet or the account’s weeks falling. The [conversion tracking guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/conversion-tracking-check) covers an action that stopped long ago and one sale counted twice, and conversions come first in the [audit checklist](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-audit-checklist) for the same reason this guide starts with them.

## Questions

- Why am I getting clicks but no conversions in Google Ads?

Either conversions aren’t being counted, or the clicks aren’t converting. Check each conversion action’s status and the All conv. column first. If your other campaigns record conversions, the tracking works and the cause is in the campaign: the searches it shows on, the page it sends them to, or too little spend so far to expect a conversion.

- How long does it take for conversions to show in Google Ads?

Google gives 3 hours for its own conversion tracking under last click attribution, 15 under other attribution models, and up to 24 for an import from Google Analytics. A conversion is reported on the day of the click and can arrive up to 90 days after it, depending on your conversion window. The Days to conversion segment shows how long yours take.

- What’s the difference between Conversions and All conversions in Google Ads?

Conversions counts the primary conversion actions a campaign optimizes toward, which are the ones bidding uses. All conv. shows every action, primary and secondary, and adds sources such as store visits and certain phone calls. A sale under All conv. that is missing from Conversions was recorded, and isn’t counted for that campaign.

- How much should a campaign spend before I judge it?

Divide its cost by what a conversion usually costs you. At one conversion’s worth, a zero happens by luck about 37% of the time; at three, about 5%; at five, under 1%. Three conversions’ worth with none is where Goldbeater raises a campaign.

- Why did my Google Ads conversions suddenly drop?

When several campaigns fall in the same week, one cause is likely behind them all: a tag removed in a site change, an import that stopped, or an action taken out of your goals. Check each action’s status, then Change history for that week. A fall in one campaign alone is more often its searches, its ads or its landing page.

- What does Awaiting conversions mean in Google Ads?

The conversion action recorded nothing in the last 7 days. Google says it typically means the action was created under 48 hours ago, your campaigns are paused, or traffic is too low to trigger a conversion. If the action recorded every day until recently, test its tag.

- Should I pause a campaign with no conversions?

Not until you’ve ruled out tracking, allowed for conversion delay, and seen it spend several conversions’ worth. Then narrow it to the searches that could convert, or pause it. If its job is something you don’t count as a sale or a lead, judge it by that.

How Goldbeater checks this

## These checks run every day, and whenever you ask.

Each finding shows its evidence, an estimate of what it costs a month where it costs money, and, where a setting fixes it, a change drafted for you to approve.

A check is code that runs the same way every time, so a new finding means your account changed. Each week Goldbeater's AI agent follows up on what the checks find, and your AI analyst answers any question about your account.
