# How do I find the search terms wasting my Google Ads budget?

Find the search terms that cost money and never convert, add them as negative keywords without blocking your own keywords, and check what changed.

In short

- The search terms report shows what people actually searched before your ads showed, with what each search cost and whether it converted.
- Filter it to terms with cost and no conversions over the last 30 days, sort by cost, and read from the top. The terms that don't fit what you sell are the waste.
- Add each one as a negative keyword. Google adds terms from the report as exact-match negatives by default, which blocks that search and nothing else.
- Before you save a broader negative, check it doesn't match one of your own keywords. A keyword its own negative blocks can't serve at all.

Stop paying for clicks that never convert.

The manual way comes first, in Google Ads itself. Then the same problem as Goldbeater finds it, every day, without anyone asking.

## The searches you pay for aren't the keywords you chose.

A keyword decides which searches your ad can show on. The search term is what the person actually typed. Google draws the line the same way: a search term is what someone enters when searching, and a keyword is what you add to an ad group so your ads reach the right people.

Broad and phrase match reach searches related to your keyword, not only the keyword itself, so the terms you pay for drift from the ones you wrote. Some of them convert, and the [find keywords guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/find-keywords-for-google-ads) shows which are worth a keyword of their own. Some take money every week and never do. Where a broad keyword is the cause, the [broad match guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-broad-match) shows how to tell its own matches from the ones it found beyond them.

A term that took real spend over a month and converted nothing is the plainest waste in an account, and the easiest to stop: a negative keyword tells Google not to show your ad on that search.

The call is still yours. A term with no conversions yet may be early in a long path to a sale, and a search for something you sell may need a better page, not a block. Where a whole campaign converts nothing, the [not-converting guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-not-converting) tells a tracking fault from clicks that don’t convert. Where the searches fit and their keyword still converts far below its campaign, the [keyword guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-keyword-optimization) reads the keyword.

## How to find the terms behind wasted spend

1. Go to Campaigns › Insights and reports › Search terms.
2. Set the date range to the last 30 days.
3. Click the filter button above the table and add two conditions: Conversions equal to 0, and Cost above an amount worth your time, such as $20. If either column is missing, add it from the columns icon.
4. Click the Cost column header to sort by it, highest first.
5. Read each term and ask whether it’s a search for something you sell. The Keyword column shows which of your keywords it matched, and Match type how closely.

Two things to know before you trust the list. Google leaves out terms that don’t have enough query activity, to protect searchers’ privacy, so the terms you can see may not account for all the spend. And a term is judged within its campaign: the same search can convert in one campaign and waste money in another.

Search terms, last 30 days, no conversions

Sample data

| Search term | Campaign | Match type | Clicks | Cost | Conversions |
| --------------------- | -------------- | ------------ | ------ | ---- | ----------- |
| sofa bed free | Sofas — Phrase | Phrase match | 64 | $412 | 0 |
| sofa repair near me | Sofas — Phrase | Phrase match | 47 | $318 | 0 |
| rug cleaning service | Rugs — Broad | Broad match | 58 | $241 | 0 |
| washable rug for dogs | Rugs — Broad | Broad match | 22 | $96 | 0 |
| leather sofa care | Sofas — Phrase | Phrase match | 19 | $58 | 0 |

The first three are searches for things this store doesn’t sell, and are the waste. washable rug for dogs is a product it does sell: look at the page and the price before you block it.

## Add them as negative keywords, and check what they block

From the same report:

1. Tick the box next to each term to block.
2. Click Add as negative keyword.
3. Choose Ad group or Campaign to add each term where it came from, or Negative keyword list to put them in a list you can apply to several campaigns.
4. Click Save.

Google adds terms from the report as exact-match negatives by default, which blocks that search and nothing else. To block more, change the match type with symbols: brackets for exact, quotation marks for phrase. Typed in without symbols, a negative is broad match. The [negative keywords guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-negative-keywords) sets each match type against Google’s own example, and covers the four places a negative can be kept.

- Negative exact blocks the search when it has exactly those words, in order, with nothing added.
- Negative phrase blocks any search containing those words in that order.
- Negative broad blocks any search containing all of the words, in any order.

Negatives don’t match close variants. Google’s example: the negative flowers blocks red flowers but not red flower. Add plurals and synonyms yourself if you want them blocked too; Google’s help says negatives already account for casing and misspellings. A dynamic ad group takes negative keywords too, and excludes pages as well as searches, which the [Dynamic Search Ads guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/dynamic-search-ads) covers. A Shopping campaign has no keywords and takes negative keywords too, which the [Shopping ads guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-shopping-ads-optimization) covers. A Performance Max campaign’s searches are read in the [Performance Max guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/performance-max-optimization#search-terms).

A negative that blocks too much

Example

Added from the report, sofa bed free becomes the exact negative \[sofa bed free]. Made the phrase negative "free", it would also block sofa with free delivery, a search this store wants.

Then make sure a negative doesn’t block one of your own keywords. A keyword its own negative blocks can’t serve, and because it spends nothing, nobody notices. Google’s help says it plainly: make sure your negative keywords don’t overlap with your regular keywords, because this will cause your ad not to show.

1. Go to Campaigns › Audiences, keywords, and content › Search keywords and look at the status of a keyword you suspect. Google’s diagnosis says A negative keyword is preventing your ad from showing when one is. It tests the exact match version of the keyword only, so it can miss a conflict on a broader match.
2. Check your negative keyword lists too. They live in the shared library, under Tools › Shared library › Exclusion lists, and only work on the campaigns they’re applied to.
3. A week or two later, read the search terms report again. If a blocked term still shows, check the date: Campaigns › Change history says when each negative was added, and a report reaching back before that date will still list it.

## What it looks like when Goldbeater finds them

Every day, Goldbeater reads the last 30 days of search terms in your enabled campaigns. It raises a finding for any term whose clicks in one campaign cost at least $20, or the same in your account’s currency, summed across that campaign’s ad groups, with no conversions in that campaign. Then it works out how often that many clicks would bring no conversion by chance, at the rate the campaign’s other searches convert. Where that’s likely, the finding is an early read: it says it’s early to judge, it’s listed under Early after everything else, and what the term cost isn’t counted as wasted spend yet. Where it’s unlikely, the money decides: medium, then high from $200 and critical from $2,000, marks that rise on a larger account, and the figure on it is what the term cost.

It drafts an exact-match negative on that campaign, so only that search is blocked. While it’s early to judge, the negative is offered rather than recommended, so adding it is your call. Where the term is one of the campaign’s own keywords, even respaced or reordered, a negative would switch the keyword off, so it offers pausing each copy of the keyword that bought the search instead. The pause is recommended where none of them recorded a conversion, and their own clicks bringing none is unlikely by chance.

Now: 64 clicks, no conversion 1% by luck · enough to judge

This search, now Chance of no conversion by luck, where this campaign's other searches convert 6.7% of clicks Under 20%, Goldbeater recommends the negative It crossed the line at 25 clicks, where Goldbeater recommends the negative: at 64 clicks, luck alone brings no conversion 1% of the time.

Why it matters

Search terms that took real spend over the last 30 days and converted nothing, in enabled Search, Standard Shopping and Performance Max campaigns alike. Each is rated by how likely its clicks were to bring nothing at the rate the campaign's other searches convert, so a few clicks with none is an early read, since it could still convert: it's listed under Early, and what it cost isn't counted as wasted spend until Goldbeater can tell. Goldbeater drafts an exact negative keyword for each, or pausing the campaign's own keyword where the search is one. While a few clicks could still explain it, or where the search converted in that campaign over the last year, or names your brand in a brand campaign, the change is offered rather than recommended.

A second check looks for the opposite mistake: an enabled keyword that a negative on its own campaign blocks. Goldbeater offers both fixes, removing the negative or pausing the keyword. It recommends pausing when another campaign bids on the same words and serves every place and language this one does, because then the negative is sending those searches there on purpose. Otherwise it recommends neither, because it can’t tell which of the two is the mistake. The [ad preview tool guide](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/google-ads-ad-preview-tool) shows that finding, on a search traced by hand from a preview with no ad to the negative behind it.

## Questions

- How do I find negative keywords before they cost money?

Google’s advice is to look for searches similar to your keywords that are really for a different product: a store that sells sofas, not repairs, can add repair on day one. After that, the search terms report is where the rest show up.

- Why is my Google Ads campaign not converting?

Check the measurement first: an action that stopped recording looks exactly like a campaign that stopped converting. [How to check your conversion tracking](https://goldbeater.ai/guides/conversion-tracking-check) covers it. If the tracking is sound, the search terms are the next place to look, because a campaign buying the wrong searches can’t convert them.

- Should negatives be exact, phrase or broad?

Start with exact, which blocks one search and nothing else. Go broader only for words you never want to show on, such as a product you don’t sell, and check first that no keyword of yours contains them.

- Why is a term I excluded still in the report?

Usually the date range reaches back before you added the negative; Change history shows when that was. Otherwise the search is a close variant, a plural or a synonym, which negatives don’t match; Google’s help says they do account for misspellings.

How Goldbeater checks this

## Stop paying for clicks that never convert.

Goldbeater finds this in your own account every day. Each finding shows its evidence, an estimate of what it costs a month where it costs money, and, where a setting fixes it, a change drafted for you to approve.

A check is code that runs the same way every time, so a new finding means your account changed. Each week Goldbeater's AI agent follows up on what the checks find, and your AI analyst answers any question about your account.
